What to expect in San Antonio Region

Admission runs from $15.95 a head at Devine Acres Farm up to $20 at South Texas Maize at Graff 7A Ranch — a real spread, and one worth checking against how long you actually plan to stay. A paid festival only pays for itself if you use it for half a day.

Texas splits two ways, and it is worth knowing which half you are visiting. Most metro-area patches truck their pumpkins in and arrange them; what you are paying for is the festival, the backdrop and the activities, not a field someone harvested. West Texas is the exception — Floydada has called itself the Pumpkin Capital of the USA for good reason. Either way, heat is the planning problem rather than cold: go at opening or in the evening, which is why so many Texas farms run their mazes after dark.
