The economics of free admission

Kroul Farms charges no admission to the property or activities—a rare model among pumpkin patches. This eliminates a financial threshold and matters most for families with young kids who might lose interest quickly, or for visitors who want a quick 45-minute stop without committing to a full afternoon.

You pay only for pumpkins, mums (fall color), and decorations you take home.

Third-generation farm, established operation

The farm has operated through multiple generations, which typically indicates a stable, mature business. Yelp’s August 2026 listing and confirmation from Travel Iowa and Iowa State University Extension suggest a well-established community presence. That’s a practical signal that hours, activities, and basic infrastructure are reliable.

Open April 11 through October 31

The farm operates year-round but shifts hours seasonally. For pumpkin-patch season (late September through October), the relevant hours are:

• Mon–Thu: 10am–6pm
• Fri–Sun: 9am–4pm

This is a working farm and retail operation, not a ticketed festival, so operating hours are more predictable and less subject to weather or crowd-based changes than festival-style patches.

Cost math

With free admission, your only variable cost is pumpkins and what else you purchase. The farm can tell you current pumpkin pricing when you call. Add mums if you want fall color.

This free-admission model keeps your total outing cost considerably lower than ticketed farms.

What’s on-site

Corn maze: included, free. Specific size/difficulty not published; assume typical difficulty scaling (10–20 minutes for young kids, 20–40 minutes for families).

Pumpkins: the primary draw. Limited detail on varieties available.

Fall decorations: the farm sells pre-made fall decor—wreaths, hay bundles, mums, possibly other seasonal items. Browse while you’re there, or skip if you’re not shopping.

Mums: fall-blooming chrysanthemums. Common at Midwestern farm stands in September and October; quality and price vary by availability and farm supply.

Mount Vernon location and timing

Mount Vernon is in Cedar County, eastern Iowa, roughly equidistant from Cedar Rapids (30 min west) and Iowa City (25 min south). The town is home to Cornell College and has a small downtown; consider pairing a farm visit with a lunch or museum stop in Mount Vernon or a nearby larger town.

Mid-to-late October is ideal from a weather perspective—cool mornings (40s), mild afternoons (60s–70s), and typically drier than September. Earlier October can still see warm afternoons; later October approaches frost.

Who this is for

Budget-conscious families with young kids benefit most. The free admission removes risk if the outing is brief or if toddlers lose interest. Multigenerational groups appreciate no gate fee. Couples or older kids looking for a festival atmosphere will find this quieter and more utilitarian than Midwest festival patches.

Visitors already in the Cedar Rapids–Iowa City corridor can efficiently add a Kroul Farms stop to an afternoon.

Practical notes

Free admission means busy weekends, especially mid-October when fall weather peaks. Weekday visits (Mon–Thu) are quieter. Field parking is unpaved; mid-October is drier than early September, but avoid visiting immediately after rain.
