Moccasin Grove is a small, relatively new operation northeast of Tallahassee — it was in its third pumpkin season as of 2025 — and it works on the simplest possible model: no gate fee, and you pay for what you pick. The owners ask that visitors buy pumpkins or flowers rather than treating the farm as free entertainment, which is an entirely fair arrangement and worth honouring.
That structure makes it the lowest-risk pumpkin outing in the Tallahassee area. Paid festivals punish you for a short visit; a family that drives out here, spends 40 minutes, and leaves with one pumpkin because the two-year-old has had enough has lost nothing. For parents of small children that flexibility is worth more than a longer attraction list.
The single most important practical fact is the schedule. Friday, Saturday and Sunday run 10am to 1pm. That is a three-hour window. Thursday is 3pm to 6:30pm. A Saturday morning that starts slowly at home very easily becomes a wasted drive, and the Miccosukee corner of Leon County is not somewhere you pass by accident.
The upside of that short window is the weather. A 10am start on a north Florida October morning is the most comfortable hour available, and the farm is closed through the afternoon thunderstorm slot that ruins visits elsewhere in the state. The Thursday evening session is the pick for photographs — low light across a zinnia and sunflower field is the best thing this farm has to offer visually.
Eight pumpkin varieties is a good spread for a small farm, but be clear-eyed about what “u-pick pumpkins” means in Florida. The state’s climate does not support a commercial fall pumpkin crop, so at essentially every Florida patch the pumpkins are trucked in and placed. We have not been able to confirm from published sources whether Moccasin Grove’s are field-grown or arranged; if it matters to you, ask when you call. The zinnias and sunflowers are a different story — those grow perfectly well in north Florida, and picking your own is the part of this visit that is genuinely agricultural rather than staged.
The rest of the offer is deliberately modest: a corn maze, a corn pit and story time. That is enough for a preschooler’s morning and not enough for a ten-year-old’s Saturday, and the farm does not pretend otherwise.
Any of the weekend mornings, arriving well before noon. Friday, Saturday and Sunday hours are 10am to 1pm — a three-hour window, not a day out — so a leisurely late-morning departure from town can leave you with 20 minutes on site. The Thursday 3pm to 6:30pm slot is the quieter option and the better one for photographs, since late-afternoon light on a zinnia and sunflower field beats midday sun by a distance.
